Leadership Coaching

Are You A Leader Who Wants Help Finding Your Voice?

Do you feel overwhelmed with your responsibilities as a leader or manager?

Are you wrestling with feelings of inadequacy, as if you’re not fit to lead?

Have you found yourself deferring to others when you have to make important decisions?

Maybe you’re a manager, aspiring leader, business owner, or someone else in a leadership role in your industry. Perhaps you’re looking for a promotion or you simply want extra support in your role as a leader. You might be under intense pressure to perform and produce, leading to anxiety and overwhelm. Maybe you’re dealing with imposter syndrome—you feel like you’re not up to the responsibilities you’ve been given and you’re afraid to take the lead on certain projects. As a result, you might be thinking that it’s time to get extra support.

Leadership Can Be A Lonely And Solitary Endeavor

Leaders are often thought of as solitary individuals who are “islands” unto themselves. You might feel isolated from the rest of your employees or colleagues, as if you’re invisible to them. Maybe other people don’t recognize your leadership because you’re always deferring to others when you have to make crucial decisions. You might struggle to find a balance between being too timid and too overbearing—you want to lead with confidence and assurance, but you don’t want to be a control freak.

If this is how you feel, then I encourage you to pursue leadership coaching. As someone with a background in both psychotherapy and the world of management, I believe that my approach to coaching can help you overcome imposter syndrome, reduce feelings of overwhelm, and discover your own authentic voice as a leader.

Many Leaders Struggle With Feelings Of Incompetence And Low Self-Worth

There’s no sugarcoating it—leadership is difficult. Although being a leader does invite plenty of admiration and envy, it also comes with a large amount of scrutiny, criticism, and responsibility. Simply put, leadership entails vulnerability—you’re at the center of attention and every decision you make has visible repercussions for the people around you. This can be incredibly stress-inducing, especially for leaders who feel like they don’t have the support they need.

In American culture, individualism and self-reliance reign supreme as the number-one values in the corporate world. As a result, many leaders try to get by on their own power instead of asking for help. We’re taught to associate asking for help with weakness—hence the popular concept of being “self-made.”

The truth, however, is that being “self-made” is a myth. Just as every athlete needs a coach—many coaches, in fact—to achieve peak performance, every leader needs other people to lean on during difficult times. The best leaders are those who continually seek the counsel, advice, and support of those they can trust.

Coaching Can Help You Improve Your Leadership Skills

For example, are you open to other people’s suggestions and feedback or are you relying too much on your own power? Do you find yourself getting defensive when your ideas don’t work out, or do you try to assess what went wrong and make corrections to your leadership style? Coaching can help you answer these questions on an in-depth level so that you can lead selflessly instead of selfishly.

Additionally, I often utilize principles of non-violent communication in my work with leaders and executives. In essence, non-violent communication focuses on expressing your needs clearly and genuinely in a way that increases the chances of your message being understood and received. This can help you respond to triggering situations with greater care and deliberation instead of reacting out of impulse.

In the end, my hope is that my emphasis on purposeful embodiment can empower you to speak from your authentic self, discover your boundaries, and lead in a way that helps you and your employees become the best versions of yourselves that you can be.

As an executive leadership coach, I integrate my advanced training and experience as a somatic psychotherapist with my MBA in Marketing and my experience in sales management. My therapeutic experience enables me to understand what motivates people on a deeper level, and my management background helps me understand the nuanced situations of the business and marketing worlds.

In coaching sessions, you and I will explore your thoughts on being a leader as well as the challenges that come with your position. We’ll assess what kind of access you have to mentors and training and look at what you can do to bolster your leadership support. We will also somatically explore and discover your own sense of leadership, with the ultimate goal being your discovery and expression of your authentic voice as a leader. Once you discover your authentic voice, you can respond to challenges in the business world more thoughtfully and successfully.

What To Expect In Leadership Coaching Sessions

How I approach coaching varies from client to client, as each leader brings their own unique situation and goals to the table. I generally use the somatic modalities of the Hakomi Method, the Re-Creation of the Self, and Expansive Brainspotting techniques to assist with “Expansive Embodiment,” which refers to the purposeful embodiment of more expansive ways of being. In the context of being a leader, this means accessing your authentic voice so that you can connect with your needs, desires, boundaries, and sense of compassion. You can also more readily identify helpful and unhelpful methods of leadership.

You May Have Some Questions And Concerns About Leadership Coaching…

Do you really have the experience to understand my leadership position?

Over the years, I have provided counseling and coaching for product managers, business owners, and software engineers. In addition to my professional experience as a licensed psychotherapist, I have experience as a top-producing sales manager, training in Web Development and Product Management, and have a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and an  MBA in Marketing. Between my education, training, and business experience, I feel that I can offer a unique perspective and help you get in touch with your inner leader.

Do you provide strategic coaching on business and financial issues?

I don’t advise on hiring, firing, financial planning, or other logistical matters. Although I have an understanding of these areas because of my management background, the coaching work I do is much deeper and more somatically-focused. After all, when it comes to management, I like to say that there are the facts and then there’s what you feel underneath the facts. Embodied performance coaching is concerned with embodying your own inner leader. And when you are in tune with your values, desires, and authentic voice, it becomes much easier to take care of strategic and logistical matters.

How long will leadership coaching take?

Everyone’s timetable is different. For the most part, the answer to this question depends on your willingness to change, your ability to be introspective, and your openness to somatic work. Leadership coaching can often be thought of as a cognitive, "top-down" approach. While the cognitive aspect is important on some level, being open to exploring the actual felt experience of leadership takes deep introspection. If you are open and motivated, then you should hopefully be able to notice changes in a relatively short timeframe.
